About the Ship

When Golden Princess’ sister ship Grand Princess first left port in May of 1998, it helped launch the era of mega-ship sailing. Like the Grand, the 2001 Golden, a vessel weighing 109,000 tons with a double-occupancy capacity of 2,600 passengers, offers public spaces for almost every interest. A swim-against-the-current lap pool suits fitness enthusiasts, nightly parties in most bars and lounges satisfy the late-night crowd. Adults play the odds at the Atlantis casino, kids at the huge Voyage of Discovery virtual reality center. Anytime dining, two specialty restaurants, five pools and nine hot tubs, and a separate sun deck for teens present extensive choices in order to please a wide range of guests.
  • What to Expect
Passengers will find a nautical theme throughout the ship, right down to the mermaid driving a team of seahorses across the top of the casino’s cashier cage and the colorful mosaic tile fish swimming up pillars around the pool. Blue-tinted windows run along the balconies like waves, and colors throughout the ship are dominated by shades of ocean blue and sand.
  • Amenity Highlights
Golden features an elegant marble atrium with glass elevators, the upscale Asian-décor Lotus Spa, and a ScholarShip@Sea line-up of art, computer, and digital photography classes. Bars and lounges are plentiful, beautifully appointed, and suit a range of tastes, from cigars and sports to champagne and caviar. Skywalker’s, the dazzling dance club soaring over the stern, with twinkling fiber optics and futuristic décor, is a popular draw, and folks back home can now watch their loved ones’ onboard wedding via the chapel’s Web cam.
  • Who Should Go
Golden Princess is well-suited for energetic baby boomers who like to sightsee all day and enjoy the various entertainment options into the night. Multi-generational groups are common, consisting of parents, kids and grandparents. Interestingly, teenagers can significantly outnumber younger kids on some sailings, especially in the Caribbean. Couples tend to range in age from their 30s to their 70s; there are fewer singles in their 20s. An abundance of cabins with private balconies please passengers who want quiet time, and dedicated deck and play areas keep teens and kids entertained. Mobility-impaired passengers may find the sheer size of the ship—getting from place to place—a hindrance.
